Task for Today
Result of bump and spec maps applied to geometry.

Independent Study
So I figured out how to use 3ds Max, it's way easier than I thought and I've modeled  Barcelona Pavilion as you can see.

How Materials Decay
Marble Studies show marble tends to fracture and chip over time. Marble react to acid rain which corrodes the material. Gypsum is one of the elements found in marble. over time a type of fungi known as patina forms in the crack between gypsum crystals. Patina takes the form of a black crust. Uneven distribution of stress in materials like marble also leads to the forming of cracks which is a common structural failure in marble over time.

Steel Steel has a passive film coating that prevents the metal from rusting, however, over time the film wears away especially if it isn't maintained which is the case in Exp 2. The unprotected iron when exposed will undergo a chemical reaction we know as rusting. Metals contain free electrons which are transferred when in contact with one another this reaction leaves behind a crusty substance (for iron the substance is known as rust. If a steel column is more maintained for a long time it would look like this.

The poled in Barcelona Pavilion would also be slightly eroded over 100 year, however the level of erosion depends on environmental conditions.here is a case of extreme erosion.

Glass There are several ways that glass will break down and decay over time depending on environmental factors. Glass cannot withstand extremely high or low temperatures which makes it crack and crystallise. High wind and other environmental factor will weaken the fractures causing the cracking and breaking of glass or accelerating it. Without, maintenance, glass near the ocean is exposed to salty air forms a thick white crust which enhances the crystallisation process.

INDEPENDENT STUDY
This weeks lecture looked at a number of things including materials used in construction and how they break down. This prompted me to think about what material I will be using for Barcelona and how they decay over time and provided an interesting insight into what my final project might look like.

  1. As what is good for the gander is good for the goose, why not let good old Ephraim Inoni benefit from this very same largesse? His account published a few days ago should pay off his debt without much loss of sleep..
